1. Can I run with just one colour bar ?

pressSIGN 5 not only allows you to create new colour bars in the pressSIGN format but now also allows you to design your own or copy layouts outside of our proprietary layout. The pressSIGN colour bars have all the necessary patches for scoring requirements in the standard measument specification. If a non-pressSIGN colour bar is used then these areas will not be included in the overall score

2. Can I use UV inks ?

Yes, but it is recommended that they comply with the ISO 2846.

3. Does pressSIGN compensate for dry back - the shift in color that takes place when the ink dries.

All versions of pressSIGN, except pressSIGN-PrintBuyer, can compensate for dry back.

Compensating for dry back means that pressSIGN will show the operator how to adjust ink density based on what the colour will be when the customer receives it.

There is no set formula for dry back because different inks react differently with different paper types. pressSIGN has a simple method by which you teach the software how to carry out the compensation.

Details on how to use the dry back facility are explained on page 132 in the pressSIGN manual.

6. I gloss coat some jobs and not others, will I need to generate separate curves for the two outputs ?

Yes, the coating will effect the curves.
last updated - 2010-10-29 16:47:17

7. I have a two colour press, can I still use pressSIGN to calibrate it ?

Yes, you will have to use the short pressSIGN colour bar and run black and cyan inks , adjust the densities to be even across the sheet and to the ISO 12647 colour specification. You would then save the curves and then repeated the process for the other two inks. This enables you to use the two curve reports to input your four ink/plate curves into your Workflow/RIP.

8. What happens if the Eye-One needs to be repaired, serviced or has a permanent fault?

If you are using pressSIGN versions before 4.5 and if the Eye-One registered with the pressSIGN needs to be returned to X-Rite for any reason, then contact your dealer and he will issue you with a new temporary license for use with a second Eye-One.

If your Eye-One develops a permanent fault and is not repairable then return the Eye-One to your dealer and he will issue you with a permanent replacement license.

pressSIGN 4.5 or later can use any Eye-One as the software is controlled by the pressSIGN dongle.

9. What is the difference between pressSIGN and pressSIGN-PrintBuyer?

pressSIGN-PrintBuyer is designed for users who need to assess a press sheet. pressSIGN is designed for users who need to control the colour on press.

pressSIGN-PrintBuyer does not display the density adjustments necessary to achieve the target L*a*b* values which are taken from either the ISO 12647 standard or a ICC CMYK profile. pressSIGN-PrintBuyer does not display the curve adjustment data.

The standard version of pressSIGN allows you to make both of these adjustments

pressSIGN-PrintBuyer allows you to measure the pressSIGN colour bar or import readings from another pressSIGN user and then gives a measurement of the sheet. It also allows you to set a standard based on an ISO 12647 setting, a previously read job or an ICC CMYK profile then set the acceptable tolerances and export these settings for use by a pressSIGN user.

10. What is the difference between the pressSIGN 1,2 and 3 Database and the pressSIGN 4 and 5 Database?

pressSIGN 3 and earlier Database
- Single file based
- Less storage capability, current live system is on 1 TB
- Multi-user activity on pc only
- Less secure since it is a file which can be manipulated and re-saved

pressSIGN 4 and later Database
- Typical client/server architecture
- Multi-user facility on Mac and Pc
- Server and client can be on different networks
- Communication established using an IP address
- Increased storage facility 32 TB + per database table

last updated - 2012-07-18 14:30:41

11. What is the maximum size of the colour bar?

It is limited by your ability to measure it, that is , the length of the Eye-One ruler or the scanning instument.
last updated - 2010-10-29 14:38:27

12. Why does my ink not achieve a Delta E of less than 5 i.e. the ISO tolerance for the CMYK primaries ?

Essentially the reason is the colour being read is not the right colour. pressSIGN compares the target colour of the solid with the measured colour. pressSIGN tells the operator how to adjust the density to get the lowest possible Delta E to the target.

If pressSIGN suggests 0% adjustment and the primary colour is outside the tolerance then increasing or lowering the density will only take the measured colour further away from the target colour.

We always suggest that printers use inks that conform to ISO 2846, the international standard for inks. Using ink that conform to this standard will make it much easier to hit all ISO 12647 standards and this problem is very unlikely to happen.

If despite using the correct ink set users still face this problem then it is most likely that there is some contamination on the rollers either from one unit to another or from a previous ink on the same unit. Either do a fresh wash up of the press or check the ink water balance and fount solution.

last updated - 2010-11-24 16:04:09

13. Why does Presssign display the ink adjustment as what you need to do, whilst all other systems show you what it actually is ?

This is because we believe it is better for the software to tell you what to do, rather than you having to interpret the results.
last updated - 2010-11-24 16:05:08

14. Will my pressSIGN work with any i1 ?

If you are using pressSIGN 4.5 or higher then you will have a dongle and you can use any eye-one. If you are trying to achieve conformity to ISO 12647 or GRACol you will need a non-UV instrument. We suggest you use a Rev D Eye-One as this is will give you the same readings when you are in strip mode or single patch mode. Previous Rev of the Eye-One gave different results
last updated - 2011-09-18 16:02:55

15. Will pressSIGN work with my digital press?

Yes. Out of the box. If you have control over the individual ink density on your digital machine then pressSIGN offers a very quick and powerful solution. We've also developed our own proprietary curve algorithms to correct some of the grey balance issues that are typical in composite grey balances on laser and toner devices called 4CX. Using our inkWIZE software in conjunction with pressSIGN AutoCurves we can now control devices that have hitherto had no means of accurate colour management by performing the adjustments on-the-fly and then changing the properties of the PDF.

16. How do I understand a pressSIGN production report?

Download our users guide to the production report which explains the report and some of the most common terms in color measurement
last updated - 2012-07-24 15:53:15

17. What is the difference between the standard version of pressSIGN and pressSIGN-Pro?

The standard version of pressSIGN reads the pressSIGN colour bar with an X-Rite Eye-One Pro.

Both pressSIGN-Pro and pressSIGN standard edition can read the full width of the press sheet using the Eye-One with the pressSIGN extended ruler. However, pressSIGN-Pro shows the adjustment per ink zone key, pressSIGN standard only provides an average adjustment target.

pressSIGN-Pro will directly control the X-Rite EasyTrax, the Techkon SpectroDrive and SpectroJet.

In addition pressSIGN-Pro will also automatically accept data from X-Rite's EasyTrax, Intellitrax S, Komori PDC-SII, Heidelberg's Image Control and devices controlled by Digital Information's InkZone Move. Each time one of these devices reads the sheet the data is automatically imported into pressSIGN for analysis.

Automatically reading the whole length of the color bar enables users to monitor all jobs and gives precise control over the productions process.

pressSIGN-Pro distinguishes between make-ready and production mode.

pressSIGN-Pro provides a production report rather than just a measurement report. The production report shows trend information about the job and for multiple jobs. These trends can be displayed on screen as well as in pdf reports.

The ability of pressSIGN-Pro to produce production reports for multiple jobs enables users to compare the performance of presses, operators, shifts and new consumables.

18. Can I install pressSIGN on more than one workstation?

Yes, the current version of pressSIGN, pressSIGN-PrintBuyer is a Client/Server product. The Server is installed once per installation site and the Client is installed on the same machine or any number of networked machines

The software can only be used when the registered Eye-One or the dongle is attached to the USB port of a the server workstation.

19. Can I use pressSIGN to reach the GRACol standard?

Strictly speaking GRACol is not a standard it is a methodology. The GRACol targets for the solid primary colors are based on the ISO 12647-2 standards and the dot gain or TVI (Tonal Value Increase) targets are centered on gray balance.

The advantage of this approach is that it is easy to see if the gray balance has shifted by looking at the gray balance patches on the sheet. The disadvantage is that it is more difficult to adjust the balance without running a full set of patches to realign the gray balance and it's harder to identify a press problem

The methodology used by pressSIGN is to ensure that the solid colors are printed correctly by showing the operator how to adjust the density to match the target colors of the primaries as measured by a spectrophotometer and when these are correct to provide the information to adjust the TVI on the platesetter or filmsetter RIP so that the TVI targets of the ISO or of a CMYK ICC are correct.

pressSIGN tells the operator how to adjust the density to get to the lowest possible delta e against the chosen target just by reading the colour bar. pressSIGN also tells the pre-press manager how to adjust the TVI curve in the RIP just from reading the colour bar. This means that there is no special set up needed and accurate colour can be continually monitored for all jobs and adjustments made during production.

20. CxF file format - does pressSIGN support this format?

CxF is a XML based file format which allows seamless, worldwide, digital communication of all commercially significant aspects of colour. Furthermore, CxF is defined in a completely open way so that all aspects of a colour can be communicated, even when the application and the colour communication features required are unknown.

The current version of the CxF file format is version 3, but pressSIGN 4.1 and later import versions 1 and 2 as well as 3. All CxF file exports are in version 3.

pressSIGN can read all color values from all CxF versions. Colors are imported into a color library and stored in the pressSIGN database for future use and reference.

pressSIGN is committed to supporting the CxF file format. CxF support is vital for interoperability between PressSIGN and these products. It will help our customers get more value from pressSIGN.

21. Can I use the pressSIGN color bar with Mitsubishi closed loop system?

Mitsubishi presses that use the MCCS2 closed loop system can be configured to read the pressSIGN color bar. You must comply with all of the following which may require some editing of the pressSIGN color bar in Adobe®: Illustrator®:.
  • The bar must be defined to cover the full width of the press.
  • You must choose the 7 patch per ink zone bar from the pressSIGN bar generator (File->Export->Colour Bar-> Full Width)
  • The closed loop system will only work when it reads a full inkZone and the inkZone must begin with Cyan and end with Black
  • The height of the bar can be either 3.5 mm (0.13779528 ”) or 5mm (0.19685039”)
  • There must be 2 mm (0.078740157”) of white space above and below the bar without any contrast bar or labels
  • When you test the bar the press console software must have a job loaded which has the same sheet size and number of colors. When editing the PDF or EPS color bar generated by pressSIGN each ink duct should read as follows CMY***K Some example color are available here.

  • Primary colours
  • Spot colours
  • TVI
  • Grey Balance
  • Overprints - Lab and Trapping
  • Sheet consistency
  • Consistency against an OK or accepted sheet
  • Paper colour

pressSIGN Clients

pressSIGN v 5 is a SQL Server based product that allows multiple clients to input and monitor the data from the printing devices connected to it. As part of the basic configuration pressSIGN-Pro v 5 is shipped with three clients additional clients can be added as required.

  • the Pro client that is used by the operator to measure and control the print device
  • the Trends client  for use in the production/pre-press office - to assign jobs to the operator, to update tonal curves, to analyse performance and communicate to customers and colleagues. Has the same functionality as the Pro client without the ability to read in new data.
  • the Mobile client for the production manager to monitor performance and communicate with the operator from anywhere connected to the internet

While the Pro client sits by the printing device in order to read and monitor individual printed sheets and show the operator how to make the necessary adjustments to the press, the Trends and Mobile clients allow pre-press and production managers to monitor the press performance without the need to be on the shop floor.

The pre-press manager can see all jobs that are currently printing from the office, new jobs can be created, targets created and jobs assigned to the right press and the right operator. When the operator signs into pressSIGN he only sees his own jobs. From the pre-press office, the manager can update tonal curves without the need to visit the factory floor or disturb the operator. All production reports and analysis can take place using the pressSIGN-Trends client.

Keep in touch with the performance of the operators and presses from anywhere connected to the internet with the pressSIGN-Mobile client. Send and receive chat messages directly with the operator.

Soft Proofing

Soft proofing is included free of charge with pressSIGN-Pro. All pressSIGN-Pro and Trends clients have the soft-proofing module built-in.

Use the soft proofing module even before printing has started. Open up the print job in pressSIGN and measure the actual paper colour. See the impact the underlying substrate is going to have when you print.

Use pressSIGN's soft proof module at press side to compare the printed sheets with the target. Use the soft proof module in the production office to see how well the job is being printed. See the impact of updating the tonal curves on the printed sheet.

Check for all types of consistency

Consistency is vital for all quality conscious print buyers. Consistency between printed jobs, wherever they are printed, consistency throughout the job and consistency across the printed sheet are all vital in matching clients requirements. presSIGN-Pro tracks these issues on behalf of the quality control or brand manager. At the same time pressSIGN-Pro shows the operators how to achieve this consistency.
